ABA

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a research-based therapy commonly used for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)12. It focuses on teaching new skills, refining learned skills, and reducing problem behaviors by breaking them down into small steps and using positive reinforcement3.

ABA therapy aims to:

  • Improve communication and language abilities
  • Enhance social skills
  • Develop self-care and hygiene routines
  • Improve play and leisure skills
  • Strengthen motor abilities5

The therapy is typically administered by registered behavior technicians (RBTs) or board-certified assistant behavior analysts (BCABAs) under the supervision of a qualified Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)56. Treatment plans are individualized based on the person's unique needs, skills, preferences, and family situation5.

Research has shown that intensive and long-term ABA therapy (25-40 hours per week for 1-3 years) can lead to improvements in intellectual functioning, language development, daily living skills, and social functioning for many children with autism7. However, it's important to note that the effectiveness may vary among individuals5.

While ABA is widely used and supported by evidence, it's not without controversy. The therapy has evolved over time, and modern approaches focus on improving quality of life rather than making individuals appear neurotypical5. As with any intervention, it's crucial to consider individual needs and preferences when deciding on appropriate treatments for autism57.
